Trillium Woodlands Preserve
COMING SOON! Hiking trails and a parking area are in the works and expected to be finished in 2025.
Access: Open to the Public
Acreage: 41 acres
Directions: The Preserve is located a few miles northwest of downtown Niles, between Riverside Road and St. Joseph Valley Parkway. From downtown Niles, head north on M-139/Front St for 3.5 miles, then take a left onto Walton Rd. After about 2 miles, turn left onto Riverside Rd. Continue on Riverside Rd. for almost a mile. The Preserve will be on the right.
Parking: Park along the roadside. A gravel parking area will be installed in 2025.
About the Preserve: This 40-acre forested property boasts a unique, diverse plant community and an abundance of wildflowers that bloom each spring, especially Great White Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum), one of the three trillium species that inspired the Preserve’s name. Several state-threatened species are found on this preserve, making them a top priority for management and restoration. When finished, the trails at Trillium Woodlands Preserve will connect with the trail system at Trillium Ravine Plant Preserve, the adjacent property owned and managed by Michigan Nature Association. Together these properties total approximately 55 acres of contiguous protected land.
History: Aerial photos indicate that the property has been forested for over a century. The southeast portion was used for agricultural purposes from 1938 through 2022, and a selective timber harvest was done sometime around 2015. Chikaming Open Lands purchased the property from Ceres Farms in 2023.
